Properly functioning kidneys prevent extra water, waste and other impurities from accumulating in the body. They also help control blood pressure and regulate the level of chemical elements in the blood. When kidneys can’t perform their function due to disease, dialysis can help keep the body running as normally as possible.

There are two types of dialysis :

1) Haemo Dialysis

2) Peritoneal Dialysis

Haemodialysis is the most common type of dialysis. This process uses an artificial kidney to remove waste and extra fluid from the blood. The blood is removed from the body and filtered through the artificial kidney. The filtered blood is then returned to the body with the help of a dialysis machine. Haemodialysis has been proved to be an important life support to the patients of kidney failure.

In VHL, this facility has been available since last 35 yrs. From the beginning, this facility is being given at a very reasonable cost. Majority of the patients need it for a very long time. Naturally, the cost is the main point of concern. Since last 5 yrs. 90% of the patients are availing this facility, free of cost, under MJPJAY scheme.

At present, there are twelve high end dialysis machines in the department. These machines are operated by skilled staff under guidance of the nephrologist. On and average, about 600 cases are performed per month.

Many patients have been dialysed, more than 1000 times, over last 15 years.
